Best Fence Companies in Chester County, PA
The ten fence companies with the largest published Google review volume in Chester County, Pennsylvania, what each listing actually shows, and the six things worth checking before you take a quote.
Google Business Profile data captured . Ratings change — check the current figure before you call.
Chester County is not one fence market. The east end — Malvern, Paoli, Berwyn, the Great Valley corridor — is dense suburban ground with homeowner associations and architectural committees. West of Coatesville it turns to farm country. The southern townships around Unionville and Kennett Square are Brandywine horse country, where the boundary fence is post-and-rail and the question is livestock, not privacy. A contractor who is good at one of those is not automatically good at the others, and a Google listing does not tell you which is which.
What the listings do tell you is who has done enough work here to have accumulated a public record, and that is worth something. Below are the ten fence businesses with the largest published review volume in the Chester County data, what each listing actually says, and the six questions we would tell a friend to ask before signing anything. We install fence in this county ourselves, which you should factor in — the figures are Google's, not ours, and you can check every one of them in about two minutes.
How this list was built
Methodology
This list is built from Google Business Profile data pulled through the Google Places API on 19 August 2026, across five text searches aimed at this county: fence company Chester County PA, fence contractor West Chester PA, fence installation Exton PA, fence company Kennett Square PA, and fence contractor Malvern PA. Twenty-five distinct listings came back, all of them reported by Google as operational. The ten below are the ten carrying the largest published review volume, ranked in that order, with the rating average reported alongside and used only to break a tie.
Volume leads the ranking on purpose. A 5.0 built on nine ratings and a 4.7 built on 191 are not the same claim, and volume is the harder of the two numbers to manufacture. That is why this top ten includes a 4.7 while several flat 5.0 listings further down the pull did not make it: on a base of 191, the lower average carries more information.
Two honest caveats. First, one company in the data — Hoff - The Fence Contractors — maintains three separate Google listings across this territory, in Media, Wayne and West Chester, each with its own rating and its own count. Adding branch listings together would let a multi-location operator outrank a single-location competitor on paperwork rather than on work, so it is ranked here on its West Chester listing, the one nearest the county seat, and on that listing it sits below all ten companies shown. Second, these numbers move. They were accurate on 19 August 2026 and they will drift, so check the live figure on Google before you call anyone.
What to look for
How to Choose a Fence Contractor
A PA registration number you can look up
Pennsylvania requires anyone performing home improvement work above the statutory threshold to hold a Home Improvement Contractor registration, and the number belongs on the proposal. Ask for it, then verify it yourself through the Attorney General's HICPA search rather than taking the number on trust. A contractor who will not give you one has told you something useful.
An insurance certificate that comes from the carrier
General liability and workers compensation, current, with your name on the certificate holder line and the document sent by the agency rather than forwarded by the contractor. Post-hole work runs along property lines and around buried services, which is exactly the situation where an expired policy becomes your problem rather than theirs.
Who files the township permit
There is no county fence permit in Pennsylvania. Zoning is municipal, and Chester County contains dozens of boroughs and townships that each set their own height limits, setbacks and application process, and each adopt and amend the Uniform Construction Code on their own schedule. Ask plainly whether the contractor prepares and files the application, or hands you a blank form and a deadline.
Whether PA One Call is filed before anyone digs
Every post hole is an excavation, and Pennsylvania law requires the utility mark-out to be filed and the waiting period observed before a shovel goes in the ground. A crew that arrives the morning after the estimate and starts augering has skipped it. Ask for the ticket number, not a reassurance.
What the proposal says about footings
Depth below the local frost line, hole diameter, concrete, and cure time before any panel is hung. Chester County is heavy clay rolling down to the Brandywine and Red Clay watersheds, and frost heave is the failure mode that pushes posts out of plumb two or three winters after the job looked perfect. A proposal that never names a footing depth is not really a proposal.
A written scope, not a number on a card
Material and grade, post spacing, rail count, gate count and hardware, who removes and hauls the old fence, and what happens if the line has to move after a survey. Pennsylvania requires a written contract for home improvement work — treat the written estimate as the baseline for that contract, and read the exclusions before the deposit, not after.

1. Smucker Fencing
4.9 on Google · 568 reviews · 5277 Horseshoe Pike, Honey Brook, PA 19344
Its Google listing carries 568 ratings at a 4.9 average, the largest published review volume of any fence business returned for this county.
The address is 5277 Horseshoe Pike in Honey Brook, in the far northwest corner of the county on the Lancaster side, with weekday hours only — Monday to Friday, 8am to 4pm, closed Saturday and Sunday. A second listing in the same pull, Chester County Fencing, publishes the same street address.
2. The Fence Authority
4.8 on Google · 459 reviews · 100 Colonial Way, West Chester, PA 19382
It is the only business in this top ten that Google classifies as a building materials store rather than a general contractor, and it holds 4.8 across 459 ratings.
Based at 100 Colonial Way in West Chester, it appeared in all five of the searches behind this list, one of only four listings in the pull that did. The store classification is a real distinction rather than a technicality: ask at the first call whether the crew setting your posts works for the company or is a subcontractor, and who stands behind the workmanship afterwards.
3. Royersford Fence Company
5.0 on Google · 367 reviews · 1502 Fawn Ln, Pottstown, PA 19465
It holds a flat 5.0 across 367 ratings, by a wide margin the largest review volume of any listing in this pull still sitting at 5.0.
On the two figures Google publishes, this is the strongest combination in the county data — the next-largest 5.0 listing here carries 70 ratings. The listing gives a Pottstown mailing address on Fawn Lane at the northern end of the county and publishes 24-hour availability every day. It surfaced on only one of our five searches, the Exton query, so it is less visible in Chester County results than its record would suggest.
4. Rusticraft Fence Company
4.7 on Google · 191 reviews · 439 E King Rd, Malvern, PA 19355
It holds 4.7 across 191 ratings and was returned by four of the five searches behind this list.
The address is 439 E King Road in Malvern, in the Great Valley, with weekday hours of 8am to 4:30pm and no weekend hours published. Its 4.7 is the lowest average in this top ten, which on a base of 191 ratings tells you more than a perfect score built on a dozen.
5. Super Fence Company, LLC
4.9 on Google · 144 reviews · 2717 Haverford Rd, Ardmore, PA 19003
It publishes Saturday hours, 9am to 2pm, one of only three listings in this top ten reachable on a weekend.
The address, 2717 Haverford Road in Ardmore, sits on the Main Line rather than inside Chester County, and the listing still surfaced on three of the five county searches. Ardmore to Kennett Square is most of the way across the territory, which makes travel a scheduling question worth raising on the first call.
6. J&A Fence
4.9 on Google · 100 reviews · 8997 Gap Newport Pike, Avondale, PA 19311
It holds 4.9 across exactly 100 ratings, from 8997 Gap Newport Pike in Avondale at the southern end of the county.
Avondale sits in the mushroom belt between Kennett Square and the Maryland line, and the listing was returned for the Kennett Square search as well as the county-wide one, which is a reasonable signal that the southwest of the county is home ground. Weekday hours, 8am to 4:30pm.
7. Invisible Fence Brand
4.8 on Google · 76 reviews · 21 Plank Ave #212, Paoli, PA 19301
It holds 4.8 across 76 ratings from the Paoli address at 21 Plank Avenue, and its listing points to a dealer page on the national invisiblefence.com site rather than an independent one.
This is a buried-wire pet containment dealership, not a builder of physical fence, and it is on the list because Google returned it for the Malvern fence-contractor search. If what you need is a boundary, a pool barrier or a privacy screen, it is not a competing quote — it is a different product solving a different problem, and the two are sometimes installed alongside each other rather than instead.
8. Jensen Fencing LLC
4.9 on Google · 75 reviews · 300 E Madison Ave, Clifton Heights, PA 19018
It holds 4.9 across 75 ratings and appeared on one of the five county searches behind this list.
The address is 300 E Madison Avenue in Clifton Heights, in eastern Delaware County, outside the county this page covers. Weekday hours, 9am to 4:30pm, closed weekends. Google files it under general contractor, the same primary category it gives most of the companies here.
9. Dunbar Fence, Inc.
5.0 on Google · 70 reviews · 755 Shropshire Dr, West Chester, PA 19382
A flat 5.0 across 70 ratings, and one of only four listings in the whole pull returned by all five of the searches behind this list.
Based at 755 Shropshire Drive in West Chester with weekday hours of 9am to 5pm. Of the listings in this pull carrying a West Chester address, it holds by far the most ratings behind a 5.0 average.
10. Nomad Fence LLC
5.0 on Google · 61 reviews · 91 Ruby Dr, Claymont, DE 19703
It holds a 5.0 average across 61 ratings and posts a 7am weekday start, earlier than any other listing in this top ten that keeps fixed hours.
The address is 91 Ruby Drive in Claymont, Delaware — across the state line, and the only entry in this top ten not based in Pennsylvania. It surfaced on the West Chester contractor search. A Delaware business installing in Pennsylvania needs Pennsylvania Home Improvement Contractor registration in its own right, which is a fair thing to ask about before the estimate.

Where JHL Fence Company Fits
This guide is published by JHL Fence Company. We are a fence contractor in this market, so treat it the way you would treat any guide written by a company with an interest in the answer: the ratings above are third-party Google data you can verify yourself, and the criteria are the ones we would tell a friend to use.
JHL Fence Company is not in the ten above, and the reason is worth stating plainly: we hold no Google Business Profile for the fence brand, so there is no public score to place us with. Publishing a ranked list we are not eligible for is the honest version of this page. Everything in this section is a fact you can check, not a claim about where we would land.
We are family owned and not a national franchise. We hold Pennsylvania Home Improvement Contractor registration PA035784 and carry general liability and workers compensation. We work from two offices — 701 S Franklin St, Suite 107, West Chester, PA 19382, (610) 890-4988, and 12 Smedley Ln, Suite 107, Newtown Square, PA 19073, (610) 535-7481 — which puts a crew base at either end of this county, from the Great Valley down through the Brandywine.
Measured against the six criteria above: we prepare and file the township permit application ourselves, we assemble the HOA architectural submission where a community requires one, we file PA One Call before any hole is dug, and we set posts in concrete below the local frost line and let them cure before panels go on. Every estimate is written, and free. If this page helps you shortlist three companies and none of them is us, it has still done its job.

Common questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Who is the highest-rated fence company in Chester County, PA?
On the Google data captured 19 August 2026, several Chester County listings hold a flat 5.0, including Royersford Fence Company, Dunbar Fence and Nomad Fence. Royersford holds its 5.0 across 367 ratings, far more than any other 5.0 listing in the pull, which makes it the strongest combination of average and volume in the county data. Smucker Fencing carries the most ratings overall, 568, at a 4.9 average. Both figures move, so check them on Google before you call.
Do I need a permit to install a fence in Chester County?
Usually yes, and it comes from your township or borough rather than the county. Chester County issues no county-level fence permit. Each municipality sets its own height limits, setback rules and application, and each adopts and amends the Uniform Construction Code on its own schedule, so the governing figures come from the municipality your parcel sits in. Corner lots are frequently treated as having two front yards, which caps the height on a frontage you may think of as a side yard. Confirm before ordering material.
How many fence companies serve Chester County?
Five Google text searches run on 19 August 2026 returned twenty-five distinct operational fence listings for Chester County and its main towns, ranging from national brand dealerships to owner-operated crews. That is the visible market rather than the whole market: a business without a Google Business Profile does not appear in a search like this at all, which is worth remembering whenever you are reading a list of this kind.
Is a 5.0 rating better than a 4.7?
Not on its own. A 5.0 across nine ratings and a 4.7 across 191 are different claims, and the second is much harder to produce. Read the volume first, then the average, then the substance of what people describe — gates that still latch a year later, a crew that cleaned up, a permit that was actually filed. One poor score on a deep listing usually tells you less than a thin listing with nothing negative in it at all.
Should I hire a fence supplier or a fence contractor?
They are different businesses, and Google labels them differently. The Fence Authority, for example, is classified as a building materials store rather than a general contractor. A supplier sells material and may subcontract the installation; a contractor sets your posts. Neither is wrong, but ask at the first call who is digging the holes, who stands behind the workmanship, and who files the township permit. Those three answers separate the two models faster than anything else.
