What fence do I need for a pool?
A pool barrier has to satisfy a specific set of code requirements simultaneously: adequate height measured from the outside grade, a limited gap beneath the barrier, picket spacing narrow enough to reject the specified gauge, no climbable horizontal members on the outside face, and gates that are self-closing and self-latching with the latch at the required height. Flat-top powder-coated aluminum is the usual answer because it satisfies all of them cleanly.
The requirement that most often disqualifies an existing fence is the climbable-member rule. A conventional wood privacy or picket fence with its horizontal rails on the outside face gives a child a foothold, and it fails regardless of height.
Gate hardware accounts for a large share of failed inspections — a gate that latches only when pushed, a latch below the required height on the outside face, or a gate that swings toward the pool will all fail.
Pennsylvania enforces these provisions through the adopted building code at the municipal level, and municipalities adopt and amend on their own schedule. We confirm the applicable requirement with your township before ordering material.
